For first timers I would recommend open face because they are less expensive and your field of vision is better. 

I recommend a full-face helmet. There are quite a few affordable options out there, which don't cost much more than their open-face counterparts. Here's a review of my $180 Conquer Equipment lid, which is a lot of helmet for the money.
