Track Driving: Art or Science?

Through SCCA Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack, some of you got your first chance to drive a car quick on a real racetrack while others took the opportunity to further hone performance driving skills.  So this begs the question: Is track driving an art or a science?  Before you answer, take a look at the Grassroots Motorsports article “Understanding Load Transfer” written by John Hagerman.

A lot of folks think racing is all about jamming down the throttle and driving “like you stole it!”  But those that have studied the art of performance driving know the physics behind the sport.  But yet, there is certainly an art to applying the physical forces that help get a car around a track quick.

So, art or science?  Or does it even really matter as long as you’re having fun at a Sports Car Club of America event such as Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack?  You be the judge.
